Jos? Manuel Barroso is now ready to announce the changes he and the concerned member states made to his Commission line up. According to Spiegel Online, he stated during the ongoing European summit in Brussels that
“We now have a good solution.”
As predicted by many observers, the Italian foreign minister, Franco Frattini will inherit the Justice and Home portfolio from Rocco Buttiglione who resigned “voluntarily”. He will also become commission vice-president.
Further changes include the move of Laszlo Kovacs, who should have managed the energy directorate and was rejected by the EP on grounds of incompetence, to oversee the tarriffs and customs department. Andris Piebalgs from Latvia, who replaces Ingrida Udre, will now oversee the energy portfolio. Neelie Kroes, the Dutch commissioner designate whose apparently too close ties to the industry disqualified her in the eyes of the EP, is keeping the competition resort in Mr Barroso’s new line up.
Tomorrow, he will present his new team to the leaders of the Parliamentary groups to gauge their initial reaction.
The problem with Neelie Smit kroes is that she is corrupt. You can call it to close to business when you phone criminals to warn them of a police raid but it is not the language i would use.
Neelie Kroes is reason to reject the proposal again. So is the Greek environment commissioner proposal. Kov?cs, a diplomat, is not qualified for tariffs and customs either, but I can live with that.
Anyone with background on Andris Piebalgs? I somehow suspect that any candidate our Central-Eastern governemnts could (or are willing) to offer up will in the energy field be clueless and be struck in the mentality of the sixties.

This implies that a part of Europe is primitive. If Europe is to be a happy union all views must have equal hearing and not be dismissed out of hand.
There must be a decision what a comission should be. Either it represents the diversity of Europe or the political will of the parliament. A compromise here will result in a comission that is neither.
