Life Before Power Point

Another quiet Saturday morning here in Barcelona. This post is definitely for those looking up at the grey sky, and feeling the need for some pretty mindless entertainment. Power Point presentations: ever been subjected to one of them. Or put another way: what was life like before Microsoft? Well Peter Norvic has been thinking about this, and I for one had a good laugh. Looking for a European connection in all this: well what would count as our equivalent of the Gettysburg Address? Suggestions Please.

BTW today is Diwali in India, so happy Diwali everyone (and no, my real name isn’t Dilesh, but would it matter if it was?).

    There is IMHO no European equivalent of the Gettysburg Adress, because there is no European nation or common European public.
    There is not one single document or speech which all Europeans would agree to be as important to them as the G.A. is to Americans.

    Even great moments in European history – such as Churchill’s iron curtain speech, Willy Brandt in Warsaw or the fall of the Berlin wall, for instance – are much more important to some European nations than to others.

  2. This, Florian, is my point. And it is indicative of the wishy-washyism surrounding the new constitution that we have nothing which reaches anywhere near this anywhere on the horizon.

    Looking at your list, you could even say that the most significant ‘European’ speech of its epoch was delivered by an American: Ich Bin Ein Berliner!

    My favourites list would be headed by MacMillan, and the ‘Winds of Change’. This and Pal Maleter in Budapest are perhaps my strongest childhood influences.

    On Churchill, I always preferred the “we will fight them on the beaches….” stuff. In fact I can remember the first time I heard someone criticise C on TV. It was so shocking, and I felt so good inside. Bit like being in Russia and hearing Kruschev’s speech (I’m not comparing the two politicians, obviously). All my family looked down on the poor and admired Churchill. It was only logical that I couldn’t stand him. Subsequently I have changed my evaluation. The friend of my enemy isn’t necessarily my enemy. I think Krugman though is still caught up in this.

    Then there must be something from Heath on Europe: remind me someone.

    But Florian you are right, we are soooooo insular. Still I hope you enjoyed the PP presentation.
