Central Bank of Cyprus statement last week —
The Central Bank of Cyprus would like to inform the public that all banks will be closed on Monday, 18 March 2013 (Green Monday).
Green Monday is the start of Lent in the Orthodox calendar. It’s not clear if the Bible referenced stability levies as part of the repentance and self-denial.
“[m]obilising internal resources…”
So that’s what it’s called.
Although Cypriot deposits are frozen indefinitely, there is no mention of this fact on the websites of the Central Bank of Cyprus or the ECB. I guess the Eurosystem of Central Banks is closed on weekends.
A tax of up to 9.9% on saving accounts to help pay for a bailout! Considering Cypriot traditions associated with Lent – Green Monday is a perfect opportunity for citizens to tell the Troika “go fly a kite.”
